What was the most irritating of all was thinking about the players he wouldn't pay over the years. Players like Vann McElroy, yet he dolled out big bucks for QB's such as Marc Wilson and JaMarcus Russell, even Jay Schroeder. To Wilson's credit he won a lot of games is a stellar person and was an insanely hard worker but he never played up to the crazy money (at the time) that Al paid him.

Go easy on Leaf. He had reinvented himself and has made an effort to help younger players avoid his mistakes. JaMarcus continues to play the victim card and doesn't seem to have worked very hard to become a productive member of society.

But yes, Between the lines Leaf most certainly did not live up to being the HOF player he was being rated against going into the 1998 NFL Draft. From that stand point I agree with you.

Grit is nice, Mendo has it in spades. What Mendo also has, that is even more important, is intelligence. JaWalrus is a negative in both.

But he was drafted by the raiders who at the time was run by Al Davis in his decline; probably the worst team for Russell to go to….

Always thought that if Russell was drafted by another team he might have had decent career in NFL….

No he would've turned out the same. He was asked what team he wanted to be drafted by. His answer was whoever pays him the most money. He was a giant red flag and Al ignored every single one of them
