Rooney Rule - discussion, keep it respectful

Post by Danchinho »

Out of interest, why are so many posters upset with the Rooney rule?
A quick cursory search by me indicates only around 20-25% of players are white but around 75% of coaches are white and all the majority owners are white.
Those numbers don’t paint the prettiest of pictures tbh.

It does indicate a bias. By whom or for what reasons I couldn’t possibly say. Odd stats though.

Are the people on here or in general that are so upset by the rule people of colour or mostly/exclusively white?

Also, while people say it should be the "Davis Rule", Al Davis made a mockery of it by interviewing James Lofton for head coach about 5 times just to check the box. I don't think he gave a shit about the rule, so it would be odd to name it after him. He just chose whoever was the best guy, regardless of race.

I do think that if you get in a room and have a chance to interview, you have a chance to show you belong. It's an opportunity. As a guy who's offered that opportunity, you can choose to turn it down.
I don't disagree about Al interviewing Lofton, but sometimes you just have to follow a rule. Al isn't hardly the only guy to ever interview just to meet the rule. I prefer to look at what he did before there was the Roney rule.

There's also the chance that even a "Rooney Rule" interview will just blow the team out of the water and lead to a job offer. Many moons ago, Mike Tomlin was a Rooney Rule interview for the Steelers (who IIRC were deciding between Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm) and ended up as their head coach for almost two decades.

More recently, Ejiro Evero was a Rooney Rule interview for us and ended up our second choice after Kubiak.

I think his attitude was that the league shouldn't need a rule and other owners should get their heads out of their asses on their own. He may have also considered it a competitive advantage that he would consider hiring great people that other teams might overlook because of bias. He cared deeply about racial equality, but also really wanted to win.

Like most rules, after it's been in place for a while it needs to be tweaked. For instance, if a team is replacing their Head Coach with one of their coordinators they shouldn't have to do all these additional interviews.

The rule brings a chance for minorities interviewed but not selected to feel even more slighted.
It’s unfortunate race is still a thing and maybe I’m insulated where I live, but I don’t see it here. Every person brings something to the table of worth but not all are made to lead an organization. Especially this one.

I don't think the rule applies if promoting from within the organization?

maybe not, how about a blind person? A white male blind person?

No, Pete Carroll did not count towards the Rooney rule.

But when you see messages on the backs of player's helmets, doesn't it make you want to CHOOSE LOVE?

Surely there have been many men about to commit a heinous crime, but then read the back of a player's helmet and decided to dedicate their life to couples therapy.

I like the concept of a broad coaching search, especially for head coach. Best candidate that fits the vision gets the job regardless. After that there's nuances. A guy like Kubiak for example will have an OC who knows his system and can assist in running it. So at this point you have certain candidates probably knowing they don't really have a shot to get the OC position. It's only checking a box. This late in the hiring process also affects things.

What if the Raiders/Kubiak already have a good idea in mind of who they want as OC/DC and the rest of the league does too? Multiple minority candidates decline an interview, what the hell do ya do to check the box? Just keep going down the list to check the box? Huge element of disrespect in my opinion. (Green) I would also like to end with me pounding the table for white gingers to be included in the Rooney rule as they're the number one minority in the world. The NFL is moving to a global image so I say it fits proper

To answer your statements In order:
#1. This tells us on average Blacks are better athletes/players then Whites, And on average Whites are better coaches then Blacks.
Should we have a Rooney rule for white players to make sure the NFL gets more whites on the playing field ?
Its all Rascist.

#2. Nobody gives a shit about pretty pictures. Go to grade school if you want a participation trophy.
In bussiness The best man should get the job, Period... doesnt matter if your black, white, brown or purple. Production is what matters in a business, not the color of your skin. Anyone that tries to alter that business principle is by nature Rascist. The rooney rule is Rascist. Black people should be offended that they cant compete with white coaches on a level playing Field. They are getting hired more because of a rule that gives them preferential treatment because the color of their skin. That is the definition of Rascism.

#3. There is No Bias. On the field the best producer gets the job. There is no bias that the NFL wants more black players on the field because the color of their skin. They are better players, better athletes therfore they win the job based on their merit....... same with coaching, there are more white coaches because they are better at coaching, they win the job because they produce better results. Again based on their merit.. if black coaches got better results over white coaches (just like playing on the field) there would be more black coaches on the sideline....

you can ask why, thats fine, i dont give a shit. Its just fact for both the athletes on the field and the coaches on the sideline...

maybe whites are better coaches because they werent as good of players, so they start planning on being coaches at a much earlier age because they were not good enough athletes and players on the field..

Maybe this is all due to the slave era, and blacks were bred to be the strongest and most capable physically for the slave owners. And unfortunately at that time on average they werent going to school like the white kids were and werent able to focus on intellectual development.. that still has an affect on society today, especially in the class system that has always existed and will always exist. Black children that are born into poverty generally dont focus on intellectual development at school, they focus at a young age to play sports to make it out of the ghetto. This is reality that weve seen in society for a long time. Its not a rascist comment, its a reality based on history and the differences between white and black culture. Black kids heros are generally sports heros, white kids are pushed by their parents to go into a different direction and focus on education. Thats Culture that stems from history..

Heres a question, Do Most of the successful black athletes come from poverty stricken ghettos ? Id like to know that % Number.

The rooney rule is rascist, whether its to give preferential treatment to blacks for coaching, or if we flipped it and gave preferential treatment to get more white players on the playing field.

Its all rascist.

Its 2026. If you interview a white male who identifies as a female (he/him/her/they/hee/haw) .......is the Rooney rule satisfied?
