Latavius Murray retires

Unread post by ALLRAIDERWORLD21 »

Gave us one of the cooler moments as a Raider fan in the last 20 years..Got to take them where we can get em. I was just getting there to the Coliseum...Remember wasn't going to go as it was Carr's Rookie year and we were winless up unto that game. I saw these asshats on TNF blabbing about the Packers all pregame and said screw this, we're going! Hopped on the road from Sac and just arrived to see this play..It was glorious...

It felt like a playoff game- Mack and Sio Moore almost screwed us in the end with that 50 yard sack celebration to the black hole .. but Raiders pulled off the upset..

The point about Murray having such a long career is a valid point. I personally don’t think he was elite, but he was better than the majority of backs that have been on our team since his departure. We also let him walk for peanuts like so many other talented players. We draft like shit early, and then when we find diamonds in the rough, we only see them as a stop gap and let the good ones leave during FA. Hopefully those days are in the rearview mirror.

Let's look at the numbers.

I like Murray, he was an average RB for those that last as long as he did.
It is rare to get a 12 year career in, that is an achievement itself.
For a 6th rounder, spectacular.

Comparable players according to PFR:

He was a 737 yard per season guy which is pretty solid, most teams are by committee and that's a good share.
Career 4.2 avg.

After his first 3 years with the Raiders, while it was a good 3 years, I can see a team wanting to aim higher yet.

He was easily above average when compared to all RB's.
He was average compared to RB's with 8+ years.

His career was long because he was used sparingly after he left the Raiders. Otis Anderson is the poster child for long careers because he had that long period of time where he got way fewer reps. And even in Latavius's most productive years, he never was asked to carry the ball 275 times or more. In his most productive year he was asked to carry the ball an average of less than 17 times per game. Even his one year in Denver he really was a nonfactor. He was a good backup that was asked to be a starter, much like we did with Steve Smith when Bo was lost, although Steve was a fullback who started at that position and was converted to a feature back. Not quite apples to apples.

But I want to hear about the politics that torpedoed his career. The claim was made, I want to hear the actual evidence to back the claim.

I do remember Murray with some good moments, but what seems to stand out in my mind was several critically terrible fumbles at the wrong time. Was one against KC, where he made a stupid move and went "lights out" if I remember correctly. Was a "fan" if you will, prior to those, but after those, I wasn't to bummed when he was gone. Seemed a liability at that point.... a difference maker in the wrong sense for the team..

That said he carved himself out a career and I hope he stacked some coin for his future!

what does that make Priest Holmes then? Undrafted and pretty much every number is pretty outstanding and better than Murray in fewer seasons. And I hated that guy.

Rated by where drafted or not even drafted, Priest Holmes a grand slam.

It's interesting you want to judge some by draft position.

But when it comes to between the lines you sort of have to leave that out, doesn't matter. What matters is on the field.

Priest Holmes > Latavius Murphy to me without any review.

But Latavius did amazing for a 6th rounder.

I was not rating him by his draft status, I was responding to those rating him by his draft status.

I just said, if that is the case, what about Priest?? I mean someone brought up 6th rounders and I responded Tom Brady. I can do this all day, bring up someone from another round and I will find someone else in that round. I am equal opportunity. The only time you can stump me is if you bring up Mr Irrelevant. There is only one worth mentioning. You go there, I got nothing.

I know. Priest better value yet. Brady GOAT in pretty much all ways. It will be a looooong time to see someone have better value.

Priest Holmes was elite talent wise. So that comparison is fine.

Getting 700+ yards at age 32 is in the upper echelon.

Murray averaged 4.2 yards per carry, that only further confirms what I've been saying. He was a notch below elite which is mostly because of opportunities, not talent.

I'll never forget the coaches playing an injured DMC and an old MJD over him pretty consistently until they couldn't anymore. Hell of a career for the Tay train.
