That doesn't mean the player gets the money sooner though, many signing bonuses have a schedule of payment that stretches out through the season.

Might just be me, but when I read about the extension, it just made me feel better about the stability of the franchise moving forward over the next few years.
Without a franchise QB, several HC and GM changes over the past few years, at times I do get the sense that whatever is here could unravel even further with a nudge here or there.
Signing Crosby and in essence solidifying him as the face of the franchise, it does at least provide a foundational piece to continue to build upon. And a foundational piece who is dedicated to using every day to get better and dedicated to winning.
It is quite possible that this sort of move may even impact free agency. Yes, it is all about money, but everything else being equal I do think having a player who only wants to win signing a long term deal with your franchise can only be considered a good look for players considering coming to LV.

2027 guaranteed for injury. Zero dead money after 2026 unless he's injured and the 2027 injury guarantee kicks in. The contract is ripe for a restructure to reduce current cap hit if needed to open up some cap space. The cap hit for this year, as it stands now, has bumped up by about $11 million from what it was prior to the extension.

I asked earlier in the thread what the new extension would do to this year's cap space, figuring they wouldn't want to push too much down the road. Essentially from $96M to $85.7M to work with this season. Drops them to 3rd most space, at the present moment. As mentioned before, and if the trend continues that this front office doesn't want to kick money downstream, this money goes faster than anticipated. Let's see what they end up doing with the Moehrig, Koonce, Spillane deals (or not).

Contract details from Over The Cap (long so I'll put it in spoilers)

The official numbers are in for Maxx Crosby via PFT and it is an interesting contract between Crosby and the Raiders. The contract is very similar in style to what the 49ers did last last year with Christian McCaffrey and my assumption is this is similar to what the Eagles did with Saquon Barkley. The Raiders themselves were one of the first to do this type of contract a few years ago when they used a similar approach to avoid a contract dispute with Darren Waller as well.
The Raiders increased Crosby’s salary for the year by $10.164 million to reach $33.282 million, which puts him just above Josh Hines-Allen of the Jaguars($33 million) in cash payments for this year. In 2026 there is another raise, this time worth $11.062 million to bring his salary to $30.782 million. This is 2nd among defenders but the two year total of $64.064 million will just surpass Chris Jones’ $63.95 million salaries over the same time frame. These salaries are all guaranteed.
In year three Crosby will earn $29.782 million which is essentially guaranteed. That keeps his three year cash slightly above Jones’, $93.846 million to $92.3 million. In year 4 he will earn a non-guaranteed $27.282 million and finally a non-guaranteed $28.212 million in 2029. He will move behind Jones in earnings from 2025 to 2028 but retains the top spot for earnings from 2025 to 2029 since Jones’ contract will expire after 2028. The new money APY works out to be $35.5 million per year which is a 4.4% jump over Nick Bosa’s $34 million per year contract.
The approach here is a smart and creative way to avoid a conflict from occurring. Wisely the Raiders jumped ahead of any possible extensions for Micah Parsons, Myles Garrett, and TJ Watt. Any of those contracts could have created various financial hurdles that may have been hard to overcome and required a much bigger contract than what was done here.
From a guarantee perspective there are a few ways we can look at this. The practical guarantee in the contract is $91.5 million, but we already know that there was zero chance he was being cut this year so I would reduce that by his original P5 and easy to earn workout bonus from his prior contract. The odds would be strongly against a release in 2026 as well so we can also take those salaries out to focus more on the new guarantee. That works out to be $50.22 million or about 47% of the new money. That is not a bad deal for the Raiders though I think it is safe to say that they would like Crosby to be effective through 2028 to make this a worthwhile extension.
Interestingly enough the Raiders did not use a signing bonus as part of the new contract. This was identical to the Waller contract where they paid a raise up front and then hit an APY with backend salaries. While this may just be the way they want to manage their salary cap since the team had a big surplus this year, it keeps the door open for trades in the future if things do go south, as they quickly did with Waller a few years ago. There is basically no dead money involved in a trade nor did the Raiders make a massive up front investment in the contract (Nick Bosa for example earned about a $32M raise in the year of signing, and it was all paid as a signing bonus).
Assuming there is no no-trade clause in the contract the Raiders, in theory, avoided a potential contract headache and gave the team their best possible roster in 2025, while still maintaining their ability to trade him next year and make the majority of the contract the responsibility of the acquiring team. The contract to a team acquiring him would be worth $116 million for four years with $59 million guaranteed. Obviously that is not the intended outcome but it is a good option to have.
This is not a bad way to handle contracts for star players who are in their prime. Get ahead of the market and dont box yourself into a corner with the cash structure or bonus structures. The players get their raise and with two old years remaining it becomes much easier to meet massive APY demands to help get a deal finalized and avoid any issues between the star and the team.

Now Maxx was a concerted effort to make sure nothing is kicked down the street....yet. As for the other 3 FA's to be, we have seen market rate, whatever that means, but Moehrig at 12M, Spillane at 10M, Koonce at 15M? That's 37M, 48 left. Now with signing bonuses and void years, you can drive those 1st year hits down a ton. On a 5 year deal(15 signing bonus), you can knock Moehrig down to a 4M hit the first year, but example of the remaining hits are 10-15-15-16. So we can add dummy years and void years, 5 year deal for Koonce?

Feels like Crosby has been around for a while but he’s still got plenty of productive seasons left in him. Hopefully last season was an aberration and his motor is still good to go full throttle every snap as that’s what sets him apart from a lot of his counterparts.
