The ref thing to me is fascinating to me.

First, I think NFL refs are fine. It is tough job and you are not going to magically find better officials out there. They do their best and are actually very accurate when you look back over a game.

Second, this is a multi-billion dollar industry and one of the fans biggest complaints every year is refs. The one thing that blemishes the league every year are blown calls that cost games. People then scream conspiracy and gambling by officials.

So you are going to play hardball, argue over nickels and dimes, and put players at risk with replacement refs. Have games with crucial implications watch over by medicore officials?

Just pay them what they want. They money is there. It is not going to bankrupt the NFL.

Being a huge English soccer fan that watches weekly, I am perfectly fine with the NFL ref's and think they do a great job. I wish other leagues around the globe did as good a job as the NFL does in regards to how much they get right and how quickly they do it.

I don't see why the NFL is playing hardball with an entity (NFLRA) that is doing a generally great job.

Well, if it was just the money, the thing probably gets done. But the refs are also demanding significant pay increases while balking at accountability measures to ensure even more accurate calls on the field. The league has an offer out there that increases wages by 6.45% which the refs have refused. But at the same time, they refuse to have any performance based qualifiers. You really cannot have it both ways. You cannot demand huge increases while rejecting measures in place for you to do better at your job, while having less accountability for job performance. I see both sides to this. The refs should be paid for the job but the league should have measures in place to do that job at a higher level of performance. On my job, I cannot demand more compensation and then let things remain at what is viewed as lacking in accountability to do my job at the best I can do.

That makes sense. But then again, how I view it is the Ref's are performing at a very, very high level. Therefor they have the right to say they don't need more accountability than what already exists. If you excel at your job you demand a raise, not a raise with conditions that usually exist for poor performing individuals.

I get that, but the NFL is wanting to increase that performance level even higher. Your perception that they are already there is not widely shared. But the sticking point is accountability. If a ref is underperforming, they are protected by and large by their union.

On a side note, if there is a ref work stoppage, the league has introduced a one year rule that allows the league office to change a ruling on the field if a clear missed or incorrect call occurs. I was not able to find if they are limiting this to certain types of call or not. Also, league personnel will be able to consult with on field officials regarding disqualifications. And that will not be to reverse a disqualification, it will include if a disqualification was warranted but not called. Those discussions can happen for on field and off field violations and a disqualification can be determined right up until the next snap. These two rules are actually quite encouraging. It keeps the calls accurate with more inexperienced refs and players will need to keep game play clean and antics on the sidelines appropriate.

FWIW I didn't find the replacements bad at all during 2012, it was overblown most likely scratch my back reasons with the union refs.

As if NFL refs don't blow whoppers. As for them striking that is their prerogative.

The replacement refs were a bit rough but I enjoyed fewer calls being made and letting the lads play. Every once in awhile it seems there is a flag for 3-6 calls in a row. That is just brutal and brings games to a screeching halt. The game truly needs to be made less complicated than it is imo
