Mayer on the move? Dophins nab Waller instead (pg.2)

Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald reports the Dolphins have “had their eye on Raiders TE Michael Mayer for a while.”

This news comes after it was reported that the Dolphins are looking to acquire a tight end after they traded Jonnu Smith to the Steelers. Mayer, who was drafted 35th overall by the Raiders back in 2023 has a career receiving line of 48-460-2 in 25 career games and took a backseat to Brock Bowers last season. Any hopes of Mayer breaking out in 2024 were immediately laid to rest after Bowers came to town, but the former Notre Dame prospect could still have something to offer another team that can give him a more significant role. Mayer has two years left on his rookie contract and should provide an immediate upgrade over the likes of Julian Hill and Pharaoh Brown, who would likely battle for the Dolphins’ starting tight end job if camp opened today.

I was in favor of trading him but like Xram said, only if the price is right. Hearing great reports about Mayer in camp so it's gotta be worth it or else we're better off keeping him.

Raiders beat writer Vincent Bonsignore says they “have no interest in trading Michael Mayer.”

It was reported earlier that the Dolphins had interest in acquiring Mayer after trading Jonnu Smith to the Steelers. Bonsignore is a well-connected beat writer who noted earlier in the day that the team has “big plans” for Mayer in 2025. While we wouldn’t completely rule out a deal for Mayer getting done, it sounds like the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere if they hope to upgrade at tight end.

He has 460 receiving yards not exactly setting the world on fire. I don't see much trade value at all. No sense trading him at this point.

But I have no idea about what really happened, how he recovered, but only see he did play well at the end of the season. And the year before he was certainly a talented tight end. With the right situation, I think he could be close to a top-tier TE.

....by all accounts, he is past whatever the deal was last year, and the crappy offense most predicted when we brought in the TRD OC, he is 'cheap' , and paired with bowers, and with someone (the chipster) who may actually be able to utilize them, and especially with the added firepower at wide out, I think we'd be nuts to trade him at this time, and especially for they are speculating would be in return....

We have a superstar TE that had 112 receptions so Mayer would of likely been invisible last year anyway. Ridiculous comment.

He is an all purpose kind of player. Can line up and block, can chip and release and can take a slot and make the tough grabs over the middle. And he is on a good contract so what in the hell do we want to get rid of him for? It would have to be a good deal for us to even consider it.


As for his "mental" issues? We have no idea what happened there, so what the hell are we even talking about. The team was lead by a clown so I think if anyone let us down it was Pierce and not even one of the players.

You can't trade him. First off, he is worth nothing. Secondly, he can help. I was really excited for him because he bulked up and supposedly worked hard on his blocking before he went out. Chip obviously likes to run a 2 TE set. Lastly, I think he will benefit because everyone will be focusing on Bowers (and soon to be Jeanty). We are going to have a diverse attack and if our OL holds up (remains to be seen), we will all be happy.

He's a talented 2nd year TE that was top 3 in his class coming out and a 2nd round pick. Take into account that TEs usually don't shine until their 3rd year or so, there are plenty of teams in need that could absolutely overpay.
