A wide receiver is worth more than a defensive end, if Raiders have crappy wide receivers, you are going to be bitching and wishing that Raiders have good wide receivers

I really thought the raiders would find a way to back load Maxx's contract so we would pay less this year, but his cap number this year is 38mil. Im really surprised, I thought he would be around a 20mil cap hit this year then it would go up sharply after that.
Oh well not my cap. I just hope he plays every game this year.

I still dont get why we paid him a record setting amount, he isnt the best in the league by a fair margin. He is probably about 6th or 7th.

They can reduce that number with a stroke of a pen, it's already built in as an option. The best way to build a contract is with higher early cap hits because there are restructure provisions to defer that cap hit at a later date if you want. In the interim, it's better for your negotiating position with players and agents if you don't have massive cap space showing on the books.

But Maxx is a top D player if not at the tip-top, so he's going to be up there. You can see where this is going and time has shown with top QB's the sooner you sign them the sooner you save in future dollars. Maxx's contract was extension-like as well. In the later years it will be much more of a bargain vs other top defenders.

The reality is that he won't be the highest paid non-QB for very long - good chance it's less than a week.

We have a bunch of cap space this year, so this is a good year to have Maxx's large cap number. We will redo his contract probably twice and add void years to bring the number down.

Plus there are a number of elite pass rushers coming up for contract extensions. This number will be about 5th or 6th in a matter of moments. Hutchinson, Watt, Garrett will be making more pretty soon. I think it is good we got it done early because those three will want more, just like Maxx would have if he signed later.

It also helps with negotiations with free agents, as the media has loved to talk about where Maxx could get traded and if we traded our best player then there's no way to pretend it's not a tear down this year.
