The Offensive Line Coach Thread

Unread post by Willmark »

As we just saw with the departure of Brennan Caroll under the latest Raiders regime- Offensive Line coach is critical. So much so, I’d argue after the OC (or in our case HC/OC combo) it’s the most crucial position coach on the offensive staff. (Maybe QB Coach too)

We can’t get Bill Callahan and Dante Scarneccia (formerly of NE) is retired. Who else is out there? Quick aside- Dante pieced together offensive lines in NE with spit, glue, rubber bands and duct tape and they won Super Bowls.

I’m also off the mindset this hire might matter even more than DC. We’ve got a lot of pieces for the offensive line that I believe were simply used or not instructed on why they wanted them to do last year.

We’re not talking best line ever in the history of the game, but I think we can take a huge step forward from what we saw last year with the right coach.

I built my view in that we have very good play makers who can perform at a high level now.

Our offensive line is the question mark built with
-Meredith, an undrafted fa.
-Putnam,and undrafted fa.
-Rogers/Grant 3rd round.
-JPJ 2nd round and injury prone.
-Glaze 3rd round.
-Parham. A 3rd rounder who has hit his ceiling.
-Cappa, who when signed ranked as one of the worst in the league.
And 1st round pick Miller who's proven to be a steady high value LT.
Mafi?
Wagner? Practice squad his entire career.

I feel the Raiders desperately need an influx of proven starters along the oline at this stage in the build and shouldn't wait 2 years to develop.

What's your take? Id love to hear it.

Posters saying the oline coach stinks is just an opinion also.

Regardless, what do think the Raiders will do with the offensive line?
As is the case every year, guys will be kept, guys will be cut, maybe a guy gets traded or IR'd, teams will replace guys in free agency, guys will be drafted. Maybe a guy is traded to the team.

See that is the difference. I am not able to see the future. I am not also going to assume that since we revamped every bit of the coaching staff that i can predict what they will do because there is no history. But I am not going to make a blanket statement of how many of the guys get replaced. And it has nothing to do with not wanting to be wrong. It has everything to do with telling everyone something that is not going to happen. I think your history suggests that is the case. You were the one who made that prediction of wins and losses and then took a victory lap after the end of the season, only for us to discover deeper into that thread you came out and said something to the effect of "well here is my actual prediction" which was far off of the actual numbers. And yet you took that victory lap all the same. So yea, I am sure ESPN has you on speed dial.

I am hoping for a complete overhaul where Klint gets to handpick his own guys, whether in FA or the draft. If Rogers and Grant or even Glaze and JPJ are not in his plans, so be it. I have zero faith that the regime that picked Rogers and Grant had a clue what they were doing.
Like you...I don't care what it cost or who gets replaced...just Get It done!!!!!

I don't have a dog in this fight. I just want us to have enough dogs fighting for positions that it works out. I do think that discounting the potential of Rogers and JPJ and the quality play of Miller is a big mistake. All those guys have value...... but don't let that stop you from adding more to their positions.

There's no fight, just one old dawg barking at everyone else for getting too rowdy and excited about things.

Just curious to know everyones opinion and thoughts for fun...if you were the GM/Coach and had your way as to FA & the draft...how would you rebuild the OL with a 2 deep depth chart (positions and names)?

Hard to call it 100% because we are likely going to draft 1 or 2 guys.

LT this year? Miller,
Left G Powers Johnson
C Linderbaum (wouldn't that be great)
Right G David Edwards
RT Eluemunor (we done f[raiders_icon]cked up losing that guy)

Backups we have more than a few options on the team as is, but I would get one on day 2 in the draft to sit and learn.

Now don't get me wrong, we are not going to be able to pull off the above. But if you want a steel wall for Mendoza and a good run blocking unit for Jeanty, you could do worse

So no original thoughts specifically on what the Raiders may do.
And it has nothing to do with not wanting to be wrong. It has everything to do with telling everyone something that is not going to happen.
So its about telling other people they're wrong

Predicated wins was having fun.
Some of my off season posts finished with
2 wins

Is that your opinion? It was a victory lap?

The ESPN comment is why i think you're d*ck.

Posters reply to posts and talk.
Your mo is to knock the shit out of everyone.

You know, one up ya

And it has nothing to do with not wanting to be wrong.

No, lots of original thoughts on what I want the Raiders to do. But no opinions on what I think they may do. I do not predict the future on things as random as how many Olinemen the Raiders will or will not change out. And last time I checked, I don't go around telling other people they are wrong nonstop. But then again, I am not shy about pointing out that victory lap you took when you knew well and good that hidden deep in that thread was where you said "actually I think..." but that did not stop the victory lap.

And no, keeping you off ignore is far more fun. You are way too butt hurt and that is is a delight. And see, I can have this conversation without it getting personal and calling you a name. And no, my MO is what I do about 90% of the time which is to talk about the team, but you left low hanging fruit where it was in reach. That is not on me, that is on you.

Is what you want based on a why?
And if so do you have a hierarchy on value as it concerns position needs that will effect the teams best interests in winning?

Share the whys of your wants because if you dont we may think your wants have no foundation rendering them meaningless.

Apparently you have mistaken me for someone who cares what others think of my opinion or feel the need to justify any of my thoughts on a grander level. You see, I have no problem having people tell me I am wrong. I just don't think someone who just called me a dick is worth the time to justify anything to.

As long as you say "I think" instead of making it seem like you "know", you' might get better and more collaborative discussion.

My preference is to give JPJ and Rogers the opportunity to win starting jobs. Thus I'd prefer to pay either Linderbaum or McGovern to hold down the center spot.

I'd also like to add one vet guard for competition. I like Spytek and Brady leading the organization but the addition of Cappa was a massive disappointment at a big overpay...... and it turned out about how most predicted. I would look at some older guards to compete and hope for the young guys to win the job, but not a complete disappointment like Cappa.

RT is tougher. Eluemunor is interesting to me, and I don't think he gets too much money at his age. Grant might slot in there, but it's way too tough to project that.

Honestly the biggest factor is that Dennison knows what he's doing. That's huge. Who knows, maybe he does something positive with Glaze (although he seems like he may be a better guard).
