Jack Bech Still Not Signed [Signed on 7/17 pg 8]

From what I heard, because the Texans gave their 2nd round WR a guaranteed contract, Bech is holding out for that.
Mandatory OTAs are next week and it doesn't appear that we're making any headway with Bech. It's easy to say just sign him and get him onboard, but it sets a shitty precedent wherein 2nd rounders at any position are going to want guaranteed contracts, which means that even if they completely bust, we're stuck with the cap hit.
I absolutely believe that players need to make as much $ as possible, but 2nd round players still have a lot to prove, and Bech is no different. The longer this holdout goes on though, the worse his bargaining position gets. It also doesn't endear him to the coaching staff and other players.
As the general rule stands right now, high second round picks usually get paid around $10,000,000, so if the guy shows promise in the first couple of years, but then shits the bed, he'll still most likely get a chance to finish out his contract, which would net him around $5-6 million.
I don't want to sour on the guy just yet, but this situation certainly isn't helping.

I would imagine the contract for Bech, and the other 2nd round picks, are already negotiated and agreed upon with the exception of the amount that will be guaranteed. Once the first "falls" everyone behind him will sign in a matter of hours. Unfortunately, The Raiders rookies report tomorrow July 17, while a lot of rookies aren't reporting until the 19th and later. Bech will miss a few days of camp unless he's the guy that moves on from the guarantee.

It's bad for the team and bad for Bech. Complain about agents all you want, but the players can decide what they want to do. In my original post I pointed out that even without guaranteed money and even if the guy busts, he'll still be set up for life if he's smart about the money he receives.
He's already way behind, which is going likely going to hurt the team. I don't care if everyone else is doing the same thing. If 90% of the population said 2+2 = 46, they would still be wrong.
Personally, I don't give a shit about what any rookie wants. Take your $10,000,000, get your ass on the field, and do your best to make our Raiders better.

And he is not going to make 10M on his rookie deal. And we should be pulling for these guys to get as much as they can. Always side with the talent whenever you can. Why would he settle for anything less than the most he can using "he will be set up for life regardless." I get it, they are making a load of cash playing a game for part of the year. But that is the point, they have a talent we can only dream of having. And yes, he has not missed a thing as of yet. Bitch when he misses camp or preseason games, until then, root for him to max out his deal.

And yes, ownership are always the bad guys. They want to squeeze every dollar away from their workforce in every way possible. Unions negotiate deals across the board to ensure that the workforce is represented properly. Case in point, the NFL colluded to keep their studies on concussions secret in an attempt to downplay the lasting effects of brain trauma. The owners bought into that in an attempt to keep denying medical claims surrounding brain injuries.
Collusion, as you suggest, is illegal by ownership. It is also protected by the NFLPA which is in place so the owners cannot tuck over the players from which they get their livelihood. The players protect themselves further by the union that stands together to ensure those pricks don't cheat the system

Don't read his stuff enough to validate you. It just floors me when people suggest a player can leave a dollar on the table. They could but why would they? These are young men who often get judged by their very public salaries. And since most the contracts are not guaranteed, the guaranteed portions are so very important.
I want every dollar I am worth and I am not worth anywhere near what they are worth. And value when it comes to money is based on your job. If I am the 58th most valued person in the selection process for my job, I expect to make the 58th most money and that is how I am negotiating my salary. Simply put, it is easy for a fan to suggest the player should shut up and play and be happy for the money they get. Not realistic. He is a player, so he needs to be paid. But I am absolutely sure his agent and his union are telling all these guys that solidarity is key to making the most they can make.
That said, history shows that the players will cave before the league or the owners. Someone is going to break ranks and that will start the dominos.

The only real positive with this Bech situation is that it’s a pretty level playing field, since 30 other teams are in the same boat.
Just grateful we didn’t pull a Bengals and completely try to screw over our first rounder. I’ve hated that franchise since the day Hue colluded with Mike Brown to give them a kings ransom for Carson Palmer straight off the couch.

Absolutely had a great career. Some unions are great and indeed there was a time they were needed. I’ve also watched dues of roughly $100/mo go to oblivion and politicians pockets. My union was pretty weak secondary to the fact I was in public safety so going on strike was never an option. Federal La or laws covered everything we ever needed if there was a labor dispute and pay raises we got whatever the BOD felt like giving us. Sure there were “negotiations” but in the end, we got raises or pay cuts because that is what the board wanted to do. I could go on about what a waste of money $100/mo for dues is when compared if that went to a Roth IRA over 20-30 years but whatever. My career was great because of the job and my brothers and the dinner table talk. Money was always secondary.
(Not sure where you are going with me benefitting more than “most”.) I suppose I have less money than some in here and I suppose I have more than some. Again not sure where you’re going with that part

Most people believe that first-round rookie contracts must be fully guaranteed, but that’s not true. Instead, the practice has evolved since the 2011 CBA was signed, and only became the unofficial standard in 2022, when every first-round pick managed to sign a fully guaranteed deal. So while each pick has a slotted salary, guarantees are a free-market negotiation.

The highest-drafted unsigned second-round pick is Seahawks safety Nick Emmanwori, whose agent is likely fielding calls from the NFLPA encouraging him to only sign a fully guaranteed deal.
If Seattle caves, the next domino is No. 36 pick Quinshon Judkins, who lost leverage after his recent arrest on domestic violence and battery charges.
In reality, everyone’s probably waiting for Tyler Shough. The 25-year-old quarterback, whom the Saints drafted at No. 40, is reportedly insisting on a fully guaranteed contract.
Let’s step back. How did we get here?

5 or 6 teams opened camp today so I doubt Harris is the only one any more. Raiders' rookies report tomorrow, July 17 so Bech will join the list.
