Oh man, I hate getting into the minutiae of a post, but here we go.

My post is in response to Wilmark’s. His was about Kubiak not necessarily needing a WR1. Which I agree with. What Kubiak does seem to like isn’t so much “WR1-2-3”, but 1 Vertical, 1 Possession, and 1 Speed, preferably with size. Shit, preferably each guy could fill all of the roles. I know if Tucker showed up to camp 3 inches taller, there isn’t a soul in that FO that wouldn’t be absolutely ecstatic. Tucker too I imagine. We’d extend his contract immediately.

With that being said, you should now be able to see that my post was coming from a place of trying to perceive our WR room through the lens of Kubiak. I used Kubiak’s previous OC stops at MINN, NO, and SEA as a means to compare to our WR room. In doing so, we can find where we might be lacking in regards to Kubiak feeling satisfied with the current WR personnel. It’s obvious he feels something is lacking, unless you want to run on the hypothesis that all of our WR visits have been purely subterfuge.

Here’s the WRs we’ve met, in-person/pro day/private/combine/Zoom; Denzel Boston 6’4” 210 4.60, Chris Brazzell 6’4” 200 4.37, Caleb Douglas 6’3” 205 4.39, Jordyn Tyson 6’2” 203 4.42, Ted Hurst 6’2” 200 4.47, Germie Bernard 6’1 206 4.48, Anthony Smith 6’0” 190 4.45, KC Concepcion 5’11” 4.44, Zachariah Branch 5’10” 175 4.33.

Here’s what we got, Nailor 6’0” 190, Tucker 5’9” 182, Bech 6’1” 214, Thornton 6’4” 185, Jackson 6’1” 198, Young 6’2 224, Dorsett 5’10” 185, Shorter 6’4” 227, Rice 6’3” 210.

Here’s Kubiak’s WR starters as OC. MINN-Jefferson 6’1” 195, Thielen 6’2” 200, Osborn 5’11” 203, (Marsette 6’1” 179 4.43 Rookie). N.O.- Olave 6’0” 187, Shaheed 5’11” 185, Thomas 6’3” 212 (INJ), Scantling 6’4” 206, Wilson Jr. 6’2” 197, Austin 6’2” 200, (Means 6’2” 215 4.43 Rookie). SEA- JSN 6’0” 197, Kupp, 6’1” 205, Shaheed (Trade), (Horton 6’2” 196 4.41 Rookie).

Tucker will be the shortest WR Kubiak has ever started. (I’m assuming he starts as Kubiak’s Vert/Speed guy). Any of the draft picks during Kubiak’s time as OC for a team have been over 6 foot. The shortest being 6’1”. A coach saying something nice about a current player is a non-event. Something bad is noteworthy.

The average NFL WRs height is 6’0 to 6’1”, He’s also shorter than the average height of previous draft picks associated with Kubiak, and the draft picks we’ve shown interest in this offseason. Doesn’t mean he’s too short to get the cookies from the top shelf. Doesn’t mean he’s too short to play in the NFL obviously. But from all the information I’ve combed through, and there being zero extension talks, I surmise that he’s too short to be Kubiak’s ideal Vert/Speed guy beyond this year.

It’s known colloquially as “coach speak”.

Geno of course is definitely not one of those options. Coaches really drive home the adage that it is genuinely wiser to trust a man’s actions over his words.

I think it best we just lay down some Raider Station Silver Dollars on whether Tucker is a Raider next year. Attlya get in here and broker this “GoodTime” bet please.

I wouldn't take too much stock in Kubiak's words about Tucker. I mean what else is he supposed to say about one of his players?

Even if a player flat out sucks, I don't recall any coach saying it as such...and it's pretty much the same way with most any sports team.

I'm just saying why say anything if not asked directly about him as opposed to being asked directly about Geno?

They often will single out someone they want to step up. Tucker is the best receiver currently on the team and he wants him to step up this year.

I'm down for that. The two scenarios are not similar. He was directly asked about Geno. Klint of his own accord brought up Tre. Take that as you will. Klint if anything is a very straight forward type of dude. I'm not a huge fan of Tre but I've seen with my own eyes the explosive ability he has. IMO, Nailor is going to show out at receiver. I'm a big believer in him. With the ground game emphasis + play action + Klints statements on Tre I'm quite certain he's going to have a solid role. Height to me again, is just not part of the equation at all. Tre proved he can play on shit offenses already

I think we can get by with what we have, but I have to admit that it would be nice to have an impactful WR that opposing defenses would have to account for on every single play and would even double team at times, which of course, could free up the other receivers.
