From what I heard, because the Texans gave their 2nd round WR a guaranteed contract, Bech is holding out for that.

Mandatory OTAs are next week and it doesn't appear that we're making any headway with Bech. It's easy to say just sign him and get him onboard, but it sets a shitty precedent wherein 2nd rounders at any position are going to want guaranteed contracts, which means that even if they completely bust, we're stuck with the cap hit.

I absolutely believe that players need to make as much $ as possible, but 2nd round players still have a lot to prove, and Bech is no different. The longer this holdout goes on though, the worse his bargaining position gets. It also doesn't endear him to the coaching staff and other players.

As the general rule stands right now, high second round picks usually get paid around $10,000,000, so if the guy shows promise in the first couple of years, but then shits the bed, he'll still most likely get a chance to finish out his contract, which would net him around $5-6 million.

I don't want to sour on the guy just yet, but this situation certainly isn't helping.

So has he signed yet?

It's a reflection of the business climate he was drafted into, not necessarily of his personal character.

absolutely agree, and his agent along with the other agents is driving this. Players want to get paid and are trusting their agents to max out the deal.

Texans screwed up the whole process with the full guarantee. Now no other agent wants to be the first one to accept a non-guaranteed contract in the second round.

before the rookie cap, there were a lot of last minute signings. I really don't want to go back to that because of this.

Looks like this is an orchestrated tactic by multiple agents, as most 2nd rounders aren't signed due to the contract the Texans gave Higgins.

This is where the owners should take a stand and not sign any of them if they holdout.

Really really bad take. That is called collusion and it is against the law. And you don't hamstring your team because a player wants his money. It is called negotiation and it is the backbone of how our country operates.

Honestly think that would be misguided. The only person to blame for the situation is McNair breaking from the rest of ownership and guaranteeing Higgins contract. Which I'm honestly a fan of, reminds me of Al. The 32 orgs should be in competition with each other for the best talent, not colluding to deflate their cost.

What about the player collusion? The owners collusion would be in direct response to the players collusion. The owners arent always the bad guys.

The workers are in a union. By definition they collude for the benefit of the whole. That is is what a union is designed to do. The history of our nation has always been about the management shitting on the worker and the unions were a response to that as a unified body to protect them. I do not care if they are about to become rich NFL players, the concept of the union has always been about ensuring that ownership does right by its workforce.

And yes, ownership are always the bad guys. They want to squeeze every dollar away from their workforce in every way possible. Unions negotiate deals across the board to ensure that the workforce is represented properly. Case in point, the NFL colluded to keep their studies on concussions secret in an attempt to downplay the lasting effects of brain trauma. The owners bought into that in an attempt to keep denying medical claims surrounding brain injuries.

Collusion, as you suggest, is illegal by ownership. It is also protected by the NFLPA which is in place so the owners cannot f[raiders_icon]ck over the players from which they get their livelihood. The players protect themselves further by the union that stands together to ensure those pricks don't cheat the system

Deadlines spur action. Some guys drafted ahead of Bech will start getting signed right before their camp report days and it will be some guys drafted ahead who set the guarantee market for 2nd rounders. If all the 2nd rounders get full guarantees then you can expect the third round to be the next level that the agents try to push guarantees further.

Remember though that most of a 2nd rounder's contract was already guaranteed last year. JPJ got about 75% of his guaranteed, and it was a much higher percentage for the guy at the top of the round so the Texans really only added a small guarantee to the prior standard.
