The Off. Line - Complaints, Fixes, Questions, Draft

Unread post by erickench »

Mike Tice once said while coaching for the Raiders: “If you look at the offense like a fancy car, the offensive line is the engine. Even though we might have nice spinners and nice rims and tinted windows and some neat paint job, it doesn’t mean crap without the engine. If the engine’s not working, the car might look like a pretty nice car, but it’s a piece of crap.” And he was 100% right. I wish we had him back. Changes must be made on the O-line. Charles Grant is a very athletic lineman. We should give him some reps at right tackle. Bring back Powers-Johnson as the starter at center. Parham has got to go. Maybe we should consider moving Meredith back to guard. He did so well there last year. :cuss:

I predicted 7-9 wins this season but this offensive line is undermining my very modest expectations. We all know the personnel isn’t very good but it’s the same as last season and has somehow become much worse. In fact it has to be in the discussion for all time worst.

He's definitely a center. He played guard prior to his junior year where he played and excelled at, center.

I feel I've seen more clips now of clueless lineman on a play then I recall in the past and it's just through 3 weeks. This tells me they are confused and that confusion will cascade into several bad things. But cluelessness seems to be coaching, maybe they aren't great overall, but they can do better than not block at all on a play and look like their trying to hide in a phone booth instead.

Extended the sample size to last season the pessimism regarding our OL is warranted.

This is always the way. Good coaches get the most out of what they have. They're able to make a below average unit into an average one.

Our players are average to a little below average. With an effective O-line coach, they could be average overall and sometimes above that.

Also, as others have pointed out, it looks like we're still trying to throw the ball 10+ yards down the field on slow developing routes. Where are the quick hitting slants, outs, reverses, and screens? We can't figure out how to run a draw play in order to slow down the pass rush?

If the other team rushes 5 guys against us every time and they never suffer for it, why would they do anything else?

Curious where you're getting this. He was recruited as a center to Oregon. 13 of his 14 starts were at center.

What’s the word on our two 3rd rounders?

How bad can they be?

The most disturbing parts to me are:

1) Putting Meredith, who had no previous experience at the position, in at Center over JPJ who won the Rimington Trophy (i.e. was voted the nation's top college Center) in 2023.

2) DJ Glaze's massive regression after a decent rookie year. Pass protection was his specialty, but now he specializes in Matador Blocking (i.e. waving at the defender as he runs by).

3) Our guards consistently sliding the wrong way and helping linemen who don't need the help whilst letting inside rushers get shot after shot at Geno.

All of this speaks to terrible o-line coaching. Carroll's nepotism hire may well be his downfall.

Hellbound wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 7:06 am Yeah outside of Miller & JPJ, there's nothing but back ups at best starting. There's nothing to work with and quite frankly, I don't think switching coaches is going to matter much. It was horrible last year too. It needs alot more talent and should've taken priority over a fcking rb being picked. That pick has Pete written all over it. Im also not sure just how good Jeanty is. He got shut down when they played good competition at Boise
Coaching/philosophy changes can help as it showed last year when we made the change. It doesn't make us good here, but right now it's embarrassingly bad. Really it's rivaling 2006 and I had real doubts I would never see this. If this continues, this will have negative repercussions beyond this season, this is stuff that can break people.

We're on pace for 64 sacks, that's on the very high side. Hurries I can't find a stat on this, I'm assuming we're high on that list as well. As for rushing somehow we aren't the worst,30th in both yards and per attempt. Even more surprising we're 22nd in attempts.

Geno's done pretty well escaping at least the first wave of would be sackers, if it were AOC I'm sure we'd be easily on path for a record breaking sacks given up season.

Not sure how Miller did yesterday but I’m betting not as bad as the interior . Cappa and Parham shouldn’t even be on the team.

I know I already posted this in another thread but look at this play. This isn’t even Parham being manhandled, this is just straight up confusion on what he’s supposed to be doing just like last week. The interior is confused, it’s like they don’t know what their assignments are.

I guess I could be wrong. Might have been looking at another player.

...brutal, you would think that even with horrendous coaching, instinct would kick in at some point, you being the one dude between you and the guy behind you getting the ball.
....it just seems like sheer stupidity to cast you #6 overall pick on a running back, and then pick the least qualified person you can find, short of perhaps the guy that brings you your mail, to lead the group that will make or break that picks fortunes, at least early on.

Nevertheless there must be changes. And it starts with moving Meredith back to guard and reinstating JPJ as a starter.
