From what I heard, because the Texans gave their 2nd round WR a guaranteed contract, Bech is holding out for that.

Mandatory OTAs are next week and it doesn't appear that we're making any headway with Bech. It's easy to say just sign him and get him onboard, but it sets a shitty precedent wherein 2nd rounders at any position are going to want guaranteed contracts, which means that even if they completely bust, we're stuck with the cap hit.

I absolutely believe that players need to make as much $ as possible, but 2nd round players still have a lot to prove, and Bech is no different. The longer this holdout goes on though, the worse his bargaining position gets. It also doesn't endear him to the coaching staff and other players.

As the general rule stands right now, high second round picks usually get paid around $10,000,000, so if the guy shows promise in the first couple of years, but then shits the bed, he'll still most likely get a chance to finish out his contract, which would net him around $5-6 million.

I don't want to sour on the guy just yet, but this situation certainly isn't helping.

You also had the letters to the editor and the op-ed piece at the end. If the Raiders showed up on the cover, it was a huge bonus--except for that classic still photo of the Bills defense smashing Jay Schroeder to a pulp in real time (let's never discuss it again). Anyway, when I was whippersnapper I'd sometimes take SI to a bar, sit there by myself, and read it cover to cover. And yes, the swimsuit edition was always a big deal. Even women looked at to see who the likely upcoming next big thing in modeling was going to be.

I know it's nostalgic as hell, but I sincerely believe it was a better time. Now you have assholes bringing up irrelevant subjects like Jack Bech being unsigned.

I also enjoyed The Sporting News. The money I made mowing lawns as a kid funded my weekly SI and TSN subscriptions. The Street & Smith NFL and MLB season previews were a big deal as well.

Journalism had a professional standard in those days, And yes, it was a much better time.

TSNs baseball coverage was great, I remember pouring over the box scores for the week and checking out the top ten lists for both leagues as well as their misc facts columns. Being from the Bay Area, I also miss the Sporting Green from the Chron., they had great columnists and beat reporters

Every time we move or I am told to clean out the storage room I pretty much find the box, open it, and spend all my time going through them all.

Granddad had every Playboy magazine starting with Marilyn. It was a great two weeks. I went through every one of them.

Granddad got Playboy for the tits, ass and bush. He was a Renaissance man, who's Iron Worker nickname was Devil.

Those were the days, coming over to Granddad's house for family get togethers with the current issue of Playboy on the coffee table. The good old days man

He could be a bust, but I dont see it. Ill bet on this guy to work hard and contribute.

I think he'll at least be solid, but the upside is hard to tell, how high the ceiling is.

Also, growing up my favorite sports reading was The Baseball Abstract by Bill James starting around 1984. It was self-published the first year and really took off from. I liked him as a writer, that always tried to avoid the tired and obvious sports talking and thinking.

If the Tennessee wr turns out as good as reports are coming from camp. I could see bech being jakobis replacement next year
