OC/DC/ST Coordinators (Chip Kelly OC, Patrick Graham DC)
Do we need an OC/DC thread or do we just keep that talk in the Pete Carrol thread?
I remember McDaniels being asked about 4-3 or 3-4 in his intro presser: he pointed out that teams are in a nickel defense with four guys on the line 85% of the time, so any talk which one you "technically" are is pointless.
With the insertion concept of RPO revolution, which has led to a running game renaissance, it’s all about interior lineman being able to two gap and linebackers fitting the right gaps. I’m really hoping we can get a two gap DT through free agency or the draft.
That's good news. With the two staying together and the players healthy, tbe D should be a strength .
Also seems like some players have really gravitated to these two, add in Carroll and I think it just got a bit more likely easier to resign free agents on that side of the ball! Good times!
I was wondering how long we also have Leonard signed for.
Remember that it's Pete Carroll's standing policy (or least it was with the Seahawks) to always let an assistant leave for a better position with another team. It's one way he has of getting in-demand assistants: They know if they get a coordinator offer down the line, he won't prevent them from leaving.
We blocked Leonard from leaving this offseason, but if he's offered a DC position with another team in a year, it'll be Next Assistant Up (unle$$ we convince him to $tay u$ing other mean$).
With the senior guys on the defensive staff set - with Graham back in the fold (and likely Leonard too) - Spytek can start working on extensions for some guys on D who are about to be FAs.
Spillane, Koonce, Chaisson, Butler, Moehrig, Hobbs, Deablo, Pola Mao - all these guys are UFAs.
Koonce is probably the trickiest one. Most expensive position on the defence but limited sample size of high end production and coming off an ACL. Ideally we get him on a 2 year deal at a reasonable price.

Graham continues to learn under Pete Carroll and is elevated to HC in or within 3-4 years (if not poached before then). Leonard becomes DT when Graham is either elevated or leaves.
