Well, the thread was all but dead in a lower forum when a wildly inaccurate report about him wanting to resurrect his career and further wanted to do it with the Raiders was put out there. And there is that thing about him and David talking nonstop about the Raiders on a podcast. He was the QB of this team for 9 of the strangest years in our history. More shit went down on his watch than any QB we have seen on the roster. I look back at those years and am surprised we don't discuss that shit more. Shit was so crazy we forget that Antonio Brown froze out his feet.

So Carr gets 1 year in Kubiaks system to not be scared to get injured and ball out or career forever nothing/bust. He knows Kubiaks system already and the defense looks improved.

Mendoza gets a year to ride the bench and watch the speed of the game yet be prepared to get in there if Carr goes down.

The idea sounds bad at first thought but maybe getting Kubiak first year as coach along with Mendoza's first year not being thrown to the wolves sounds reasonable. Also, gives Carr a chance to resurrect his stature as a Raiders player overall like Woodson did (not that it's the same).

I'm not advocating for Carr to come back I'm just noticing it might not be a far fetched bad idea.

Competent veteran QB's are at a PREMIUM right now. Especially ones that would play for a journeyman's wage. I think one of the factors that made Carr so polarizing (aside from his chokeitus in the Red Zone and 3rd quarter disappearing acts) were the optics of how he carried himself.

That being said he never played as poorly as Garopollo, Geno Smith and others that followed but considering the baggage he would bring and the fact that he is only in his mid 30's would create unneeded drama in the QB room. Plus his brother would say some stupid shit on his talk show. Not that anyone takes him seriously.

That ship has sailed but that fact that it remotely a topic of discussion it is more of a testament to the current veteran QB situation on the free agent market. I wish there was a Josh McCown out there but there isn't. Mariota would have been ideal.

AOC is a competent veteran, Jason Garrett type. Maybe Mendoza lights it up in the pre-season like Carr did in 2014 and makes it a non issue.

If Carr decides to unretire and return to the NFL, he remains a New Orleans Saint, meaning the team would have to trade him or release him for him to join another team.

imagine the raiders having to give the saints a pick to get derek carr back to the raiders, when it was derek carr whom screwed the raiders out of picks to play for the saints

I definitely would not be a straight forward process as it would to simply sign a veteran. What has Vince Evan's been up to? lol

If that were to happen, I don't see a trade being necessary. I'd bet on his release.

I highly doubt they would ever bring carr back unless its to retire as a Raider, for like 1 day.

Why would the Saints release him, they have no reason to do so. If a team wants him, the Saints could just say, give us a day three pick and we will trade his rights to you. Carr has a no trade clause in his contract so he would have to agree, but if he wants back in, he would need to agree and the Saints would want something for him. It is pretty simple actually. The Saints have zero reason just to let him go for nothing.

First, Carr is not the right guy for the Raiders and the Raiders' situation doesn't work for him. If he comes back, he wants to be the undisputed starter. So the Raiders' situation doesn't work.

Second, he would make more money than we'd want to spend on a bridge/backup QB - I don't know how much his contract is for in 2026 but I believe it's in the $40 million range. Whether a team is willing to pay that is in question, but I don't believe he'd be willing to return to the NFL unless he's being relatively well paid.

That contract level, however, is the reason that he can probably return without the Saints commanding much, if anything, in trade. If he unretires, his contract resumes. If he unretires and is not traded then the Saints, who already have a new QB, would have to pay him $40 million (or whatever it is). They will let him go to another team and he would likely negotiate all of that, or negotiate a release, prior to taking any action. I suspect that all that would be handled pretty easily without conflict. As long as he isn't going to a team in the NFC South, trade compensation would not be a sticking poing.

Regardless, he's just not the right guy to mentor Mendoza. We need a guy who is truly focused on Mendoza instead of just checking himself out in the mirror all day long.
