Clint Eastwood changed the genre by digging deep and applying a revisionist take; bringing to light 19th century events such as federal land reform in the American Southwest, Bleeding Kansas and the Missouri compromise. I also loved his roles in the Sergio Leone directed films.
Not on the list but HBO Films came out with some good ones in the late 1980's such as The Tracker and The Quick and The Dead (not to be confused with the Gene Hackman/Russell Crowe movie which as also very good). The Lonesome Dove mini series was epic. I watch it every winter.
