Jack Bech Still Not Signed [Signed on 7/17 pg 8]

From what I heard, because the Texans gave their 2nd round WR a guaranteed contract, Bech is holding out for that.

Mandatory OTAs are next week and it doesn't appear that we're making any headway with Bech. It's easy to say just sign him and get him onboard, but it sets a shitty precedent wherein 2nd rounders at any position are going to want guaranteed contracts, which means that even if they completely bust, we're stuck with the cap hit.

I absolutely believe that players need to make as much $ as possible, but 2nd round players still have a lot to prove, and Bech is no different. The longer this holdout goes on though, the worse his bargaining position gets. It also doesn't endear him to the coaching staff and other players.

As the general rule stands right now, high second round picks usually get paid around $10,000,000, so if the guy shows promise in the first couple of years, but then shits the bed, he'll still most likely get a chance to finish out his contract, which would net him around $5-6 million.

I don't want to sour on the guy just yet, but this situation certainly isn't helping.

I dont like when draft picks hold out, strike 1 for him already. If every player was this selfish and held out, then the NFL would really go down the tubes fast. They remind me of dumpster divers, they are fine until everyone else starts dumpster diving, then they starve.

Taking into consideration that it’s the off-season… I think we have our answer.

Now if Training Camp starts in July and he's not there, he'll be holding out. But not until then.

Basically The Texans and the Browns upset the apple cart by giving first time ever fully guaranteed contracts for the 1 and 2 picks of the 2nd rd. So every other agent is waiting around to see what the next guy gets, once the guys at the top start getting signed the dominoes will fall. Right now the agents and owners are waiting to see who blinks first, if another team guarantees a contract than every agent is going to want the same.

Did you negotiate paid time off or anything? If so, did you think of yourself as selfish? After all , you were holding out and/or negotiating for more money/benefits too albeit on a smaller scale

The first makes your life a little better, the second sets you up for life; and to get that 10K you likely need years of experience and the exceeding of expectations.

If Bech signs soon, then great. If he holds out come training camp, we have a very real problem on our hands.

Demetrius Knight signed for 9 mil (pick #49). Don't see any full guarantee on his contract. So does it even play into Jack's contract?

Now all the 2nd rounders are holding out except one, so its not just Bech.

Bech just didn't decide he was gonna hold out is what I'm saying, this is his agent saying let's someone else set the market after what the Texans did.

This “Real Housewives-ing” got me to a thinkin’. I imagine “Live” will be hands-down everyone’s favorite way to watch sports outside of the contrarian for contrarian’s sake folk. “Where” might be different. At my age, with the cost, finding parking, and a general distaste for the majority of humanity, I find Home to be the perfect viewing venue. It’s at its most entertaining for me, at home with friends.

What about reading though? When would you say you got the most bang-for-your-buck entertainment-wise? Reflecting has me believing I enjoyed my sports consumption via reading at the long heyday of “Sports Illustrated”. Weekly sports absorption would be the peak in my opinion. I would be excited popping open the mail and seeing it in there. I’d devour it at once, and spend the rest of the week rereading it on the pot. And that swimsuit issue, good Lord. There was an age when that thing was pure gold.

As the 28th pick of the second round, Bech may be one of the first second rounders to give in and sign a non-guaranteed contract. Bech is likely to be eligible for a four-year contract worth about $7 million — since the second pick of the third round, Ashton Gillotte signed a deal worth $6.7 million with the Kansas City Chiefs.

So even though the players will sign by the start of training camp next month — and some may even ink deals ahead of the upcoming mandatory minicamps — no one wants to be the first second-round pick to sign and ruin the potential for a fully guaranteed deal for everyone else.

“It’s unprecedented for this many second-round picks to still have not signed,” McClain said, “and you can’t blame them for asking.”
