correct, Gonzalez was widely considered a first rounder, but a mid to lower first rounder. Tyree just never figured stuff out. Maybe he will at his next stop. Doubt it, but maybe. Carter was mentioned with us a lot in that draft, but his legal issues were likely why we did not. What a horrible draft overall. You know it is bad when guys want us to trade for Hendon Hooker. Thank God it looks like we have competent minds in the building now. Just keep Doofus away from the decisionsViper wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 6:11 am At the time it was perceived the 7th spot was too rich for Gonzalez. Always easy to look back and say he should have been the pick, but damn, that kid sure would have solved a problem for us in a big way.

I think Tyree will be lucky to follow the production of Clelin Ferrell for the Saints. Carter still has character issues but undeniable athletic ability, we just couldn’t pick him because of obvious reasons and the media circus had he done something similar to Ruggs. It was just a risk Davis couldn’t take. You don’t hear Hooker mentioned anymore and if you didn’t google search it one could believe he was no longer in the league. As for Davis, he has done a very good job as of late to stay out of the headlines. Other than signing paychecks, that’s his main responsibility - look invisible.Attyla wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 6:25 am correct, Gonzalez was widely considered a first rounder, but a mid to lower first rounder. Another reminder how a highlight reel has to be viewed with some caution. Every so often a player has a low-light reel, those are probably better indicators. This reel make Tyree look really good and yes the last game he was damn good, watch that was the game that the lights finally turned on for him. We'll that's what the Saints are hoping for now.GoodTimeCharlie wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 2:18 am This gave me a chuckle. Moleasses’ 2025 highlight reel. All the best plays were during our final game vs. the ordered-to-lose Chiefs.

Better yet, watch game film. You can find a lot of it out there. But like with QBs, I tend to try and find their worst games to see how they respond to pressure and such. Tyree's game day film was not terrible, obviously. He was just slow and had a really bad first step.SkullCrusher wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 7:50 am Another reminder how a highlight reel has to be viewed with some caution. He is probably worth a 5th round gamble for the Saints. But moreover, our new management still had him under control contract wise and must’ve looked at him closely and said, nope, let’s see what we can get for him.SkullCrusher wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 7:50 am Another reminder how a highlight reel has to be viewed with some caution. yep, they needed that position depth so they floated a cheap pick for him. Good move given the contract and it is a one year throw away as neededRunOverByHubbard wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 8:26 am He is probably worth a 5th round gamble for the Saints. What’s telling aside from their film tape is how they’re viewed with their dedication, work ethic and character.Attyla wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 7:58 am Better yet, watch game film. Do they show up early, stay late? Consistently? Coachable, take constructive criticism?
Athlete first, look into the rest if they fit your criteria for the team.
A lot of words for I agree with watching the game as opposed to highlights first.

I know hindsight is 20/20, but the fact they could have had Jalen Cater makes it a tough pill to swallow. Even more so they had to add a 7th rounder to just to get a 5th for the guy. Classic Raiders 1st round shennanigans.

Agreed, lots goes into player evaluations, much of which requires seeing them play in many situations. One on one is key to knowing if there are flags from a personality context and on and on. I wish I had watched more of Tyree's college film, I feel like I missed out on that aspect of his pre draft processViper wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 8:42 am What’s telling aside from their film tape is how they’re viewed with their dedication, work ethic and character.

Sure actual film, but now we're talking a real time investment. That's also a good idea, find the bad game, check the next game. Now if that is the pattern, now we have a player that only shows up when they want to. Now we know with Tyree this pattern doesn't really exist, it was more no-show and a rare flash here and there, could easily be described like a broken clock.Attyla wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 7:58 am Better yet, watch game film. If you are focused on one player, for instance Tyree, watching game tape is not that bad, since you are only watching the defensive side of the game. And you can blow through a lot of time in between plays. Not bad at all.SkullCrusher wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 9:15 am Sure actual film, but now we're talking a real time investment. I did that with Mendoza, watched a bunch of Cal games, focused on just the offense and then some of the Indiana games early in the year. Took relatively little time. Later in the year, his games were on TV most weeks so I spent time on Saturday's that are usually dedicated to watching football and watched his games. It was a lot of fun. Beer helps too.

I’m not sure it can be described as a no show. I’ve read reports indicating he put some significant time with Maxx in the off season trying to refine his skills, maybe take a different approach with his work ethic and diet. It’s more likely he just doesn’t have the abilities to be a top edge in the league no matter how much effort he’s put into it. Sure, he can improve in a lot of ways but, realistically he’s likely to never become that guy no matter how much he puts into his game.SkullCrusher wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 9:15 am Sure actual film, but now we're talking a real time investment. Yep, I got a Firefox addon and set the left and right button on the keyboard to skip x seconds forward/back, that really helps as well.Attyla wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 9:22 am If you are focused on one player, for instance Tyree, watching game tape is not that bad, since you are only watching the defensive side of the game. Yeah internally he could be bust'in balls, I was looking more at games and it feels no-show'ish to me, I could be wrong.Viper wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 9:22 am I’m not sure it can be described as a no show. ...spending a 4th on our new 'top 10' talent corner , albeit with the legitimate questions regarding his knee, and risks associated with that, when compared to getting a 5th back for a guy we couldn't seem to get much of anything out of for 4 years, and at an overall cost savings for the year, seems like a good move.
