Actually, I like this draft, Spytek moved around a lot and got us some nice pieces. We did not get everything but it feels like Raiderland Christmas.


So let's see those overreaction grades. I know, I know, you cannot grade a draft for 3 years. Boo f[raiders_icon]cking Hoo. Lighten up Francis and grade this glorious weekend.

Mendoza by himself does not get us an A but the rest of the group certainly has to impress when put together. McCoy if he heals up makes the robber barons of the draft.

And there will be UDFAs and post draft pickups and drops. Tyree is going, well eventually, I mean the door s 40 yards away so it will take some time.

Grade A- but if McCoy pans out the grade could change.

You’re a saint, alas, mine are shot already. Only cartilage-rich parts of me are my ever-growing nose and ears. Though if I were able, it’d have to be in a trade for hair plugs.

I was researching this because it just seems a thing that we would have made some leaps in medical discovery. There’s an “allograft” which is to use tissue from a donor (cadaver), rather than an “autograft”, but it’s not really suitable for anything more strenuous than being able to walk somewhat pain-free.

Also read that doctors push back against trying to use bone plug material from the “good” knee for use on the “bad” one due to an increased likelihood of rejection. Plus you then have 2 weakened knees.

There’s also synthetic lab-engineered cartilage, but it’s still in its infancy. Unproven for just the basics of life. No chance for McCoy as of yet.

This surgery can last around 10 years or so depending on success and the surgeon performing the surgery. Maybe less in an athlete. My only concern is whether it takes or not and it sounds like he recently got the repair so it is early to know for certain. But he ran at his pro day so that is a good sign.

As with all things medical, the younger you are and the healthier you are the better your chances. He is young and healthy so I am optimistic. The recovery time is 3-6 months for the plug itself on average so assuming he is doing the things required, he could conceivably be ready for camp but if I am the Raiders I don't risk anything along the way and get regular scans to see the progress.

If everything looks good all through camps I would say play him this year. He's stated he's down for playing now or surgery, doesn't matter to him. If the team isnt competing for anything or he has an issue with the knee you shut him down early and get th surgery done. If he plays and plays well all year, what then? I suppose he can get surgery after the super bowl parade celebration in Vegas (;

He had a surgery. Some teams feel he needs another. He did run in the 4.3s and had something like a 38 inch vertical jump after the surgery. We'll have to see what he and the Raiders want to do - I don't think it will be an easy answer even for the experts who have all the information.

Just play him. Even if his surgery is successful, he won't be 100% for two years. Average shelf life is only 3-5 years as it is. Why risk not playing in the NFL and getting a second contract? Just play through it and get a second surgery when your pro career is over 5 years from now. That way you don't need to worry about getting into game shape after, just retire.

Not trying to be morbid here, but let's say once he starts playing whether or not he get's a 2nd surgery and he ends up being a high level starter for us for say, um, 7 years. I would say that is a win-win for both of us. That in turn means we spent a 4th round pick on a guy who turned out to be a very good CB and he got to his second contract and likely an extension on that contract before calling it a career, or possibly moving on to another team for a couple more years.

From what I understand, this is basically how it all breaks down for McCoy:

His ACL is healed, and he had a bone plug as a graft to replace some of the cartilage. The question at hand is if he should have a second surgery.

The tricky thing with a bone plug is that they take the material to make it from your own bone, so there is a limited number of times you can do it successfully.

If he does a second surgery, he will be out this year, and faces two possible outcomes:

SUCCESSFUL: he will have a chance to play a longer career

UNSUCCESSFUL: game over

If he does nothing, he can probably play this year, but he risks a shorter career because wear and tear makes it less likely a second surgery would be successful, if he needs it.

Again, this is just how I understand what I've heard on the internet -- if anyone has better info feel free to correct me

Not unrealistic as he’s incredibly young still, will be 21 in August. Most elite corners can play til 30 and some beyond. However, he’s compromised and doubtful he makes it til then and there’s no guarantee a second surgery will be successful. McCoy is an asset that if able to play without negative effects from his knee will most certainly play well. Personally, I’ll cringe with every tackle, every sudden change in direction. You see many non contact injuries in the knee every year.

This is a business that allows employment through positive results but, there is a human aspect to this decision of getting a second surgery or play and see how it goes. As a fan, I want him to play and contribute to turning this team around but, there is the long term, what’s best for the player for his future life outside of football and my hope is whatever the decision is, they take that into consideration. Not everyone is of the same thought and I understand but as we get older we realize that quality of life trumps a game.
