Best for both parties for a fresh start. I do think with the scheme change with Tonka and Lalulu making strides last year, it was going to be tougher for him to carve out a role.

I won’t be surprised if at least initially he shows more than he did with the Raiders as the Saints will likely give him more snaps than he got with the Raiders but I don’t think we will look back at him as one that got away. It was a bad pick by as the guy was never worthy of a top 10 pick as Raiders management and scouts clearly missed with him.

Not sure I follow your thoughts: he was highly rated before the draft or highly rated once he was playing for the Raiders? Only a couple of posters here said he was good once we got a look at him with a supposedly fully healed foot. Certainly, for pro years 2 and 3 the foot was not an issue that we could see or heard about. Back to when he was drafted, yes he was a highly rated edge rusher but no way he should have gone that high in the draft. He had mostly positive traits coming out of college and was projected to be a first round pick. It is probably not fair to say he should have gone in the middle rounds of the draft, but on the other hand, with the foot injury and the obvious "slow off the mark" issues, I would have not drafted him at #7. It was not a great draft but there were options at #7; I wanted Gonzalez after Witherspoon was taken. Jack Campbell was also on my radar as I have wanted an impact LB forever. Several mocks has us taking the OL Skoronski. I was supportive on passing on Carter given what had just gone down with Ruggs.Jeevo wrote: Sun Apr 26, 2026 10:32 pm It wasn’t a crazy pick in any way at the time. Insane that he was highly rated after watching him play fir a few years.

Highly rated BEFORE the draft. Definitely not afterwards.RunOverByHubbard wrote: Mon Apr 27, 2026 9:57 am Not sure I follow your thoughts: he was highly rated before the draft or highly rated once he was playing for the Raiders? I wanted to trade back 3 or 4 spots and draft Gonzalez. I thought 7 was too high for him. Ah well.RunOverByHubbard wrote: Mon Apr 27, 2026 9:57 am Not sure I follow your thoughts: he was highly rated before the draft or highly rated once he was playing for the Raiders? OK, makes sense. So scouts could see in college what we saw from day one as a Pro: slow "get off" and lack of progressing skills like hand-fighting and spin moves. I mean, the guy never changed in three years. A couple of times, he was lucky to run into some sacks and maybe 3 or 4 times I saw him actually shed a block and get the ball carrier. I did see that tight ends could usually handle him one-on-one. Not good for a top draft pick when they don't even have to assign an offensive tackle to block you.

I know a lot people had him highly rated but those people proved they don't know football.
All Tyree had was those measurables of his. But when you look at his tape anyone with good football knowledge could see he wasn't a player. Not for the 1st or 2nd rounds or 3rd imo. I wouldn't have taken a flyer on him at all and not till the 4th at best. I was hoping when the Raiders FO idiots that took him at 7 that year he would hopefully be able to be coached up with his raw physical gifts. But never happened.

So you're referring to all the scouts, mainstream talkers, all the people who rank the players?ELCAraiderfan wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 4:40 pm I know a lot people had him highly rated but those people proved they don't know football.

He's gone now, so I don't really care, but no one thought The Raiders made a bad pick taking Wilson at 7.

looking back his scouting report looks unrealistically optimistic about everything except his wingspan. The get off - easy fix. The lack of spatial awareness or football IQ? No problem. The lack of explosiveness and lateral agility? All good hell do some ladder work. The part where he literally has no moves to speak of? He can be taught.RunOverByHubbard wrote: Mon Apr 27, 2026 1:31 pm OK, makes sense. This gave me a chuckle. Moleasses’ 2025 highlight reel. All the best plays were during our final game vs. the ordered-to-lose Chiefs.

At the time it was perceived the 7th spot was too rich for Gonzalez. Always easy to look back and say he should have been the pick, but damn, that kid sure would have solved a problem for us in a big way.
