That was one of my points a few pages back. Protect NM while the oline gets debugged. Don't kill the golden goose, send it the food taster.

RI RAIDER wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 7:30 am Head scratcher to me. Why wouldn't they just sign him (Rivers, Tannehill, Foles, other old QB) to work with him daily (Klint must know someone he would trust). Pay him like a player (and even have him practice with him and wear a red jersey). Just have that person be a personal tutor. If we have to go to a backup (meaning we are not winning games), Aidan is fine.
Your line of thinking is a head-scratcher. Serious question: did you actually think about what you were saying before saying it? Pay him like a player, practice with the team, tutor/work daily, but don't play if/when needed? You mean hire a QB coach? That makes absolutely zero sense from a financial standpoint. Not only that, but "he" would be taking up a roster spot.

My guess is Kubiak has a little bit of pride in his work, and wants to win on Sundays immediately. He’d rather put wins in his equity bank account than, “come on dude, it’s his first year” sympathies. My guess is he thinks this is the best way to do that.

Ancillary benefits would be:
1. Mendoza is not thrown to the wolves.
2. Mendoza can watch Kirk and learn (in spite of Kirk probably not trying to teach him or share snaps).

The advantage to having a player on the roster "coach" the QB is that there are no CBA restrictions on how much time those players can spend together. A coach has specific guidelines in the CBA. So, for example, during June and July leading to training camp a coach can't be coaching the rookie. A teammate can. Yes it costs a roster spot, but the development of your future QB is worth one extra roster spot when he's a rookie.

I really don’t like this move….Mendoza is coming to the raiders as a franchise QB and he really does not need anybody challenge him for the QB spot….

In 1970,s it was ok to sit a first round pick for few season but in today game; they need to start straight away….

That's exactly what he's being brought in to do! And to play if needed.

heavyD wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 6:39 am Clearly they weren't bluffing about sitting Mendoza for a season. I'm sure he will see time in games that are blowouts one way or the other or even a Cousins injury. I don't see this as a bad thing really as with a new offense there will be a lot of moving parts and year two of the offense may be a better place for Mendoza to get his feet wet.
Agreed, as we are aware of the uncertainty of our new management, coaches, and returning players as well as the newly acquired FAs and draftees, we simply don't know what we have yet. And we won't know till the season gradually progresses.

Cousins is nothing more than a temporary QB but is much better than AOC and he came cheap, so let him get his brains beat out by opposing defenses in case our OL does not prove that they are up to the challenge.. Mendoza on the other hand, will be drafted as our future fixture at QB and we will eventually see him start, but only when management feels the time is right, as it should be.

Cousins and Kubiak previously worked together with the Minnesota Vikings from 2019-2021 when Cousins' was the team's starting quarterback and Kubiak was the quarterback coach and then then offensive coordinator.

I agree there, but is this the right guy? I don't think so, we had better options

Cousins was not brought here to challenge FM for the QB spot.

Going from Aidan to Cousins as the pro from Mendoza to learn from and potentially sit behind for a handful of games is a positive. Looks like it could save us money too. Kubiak knows Cousins well so im sure he knows better than us if Kirk can be a mentor.

Kubiak and Spy pretty much told all of us they wanted to do this before hand they were just waiting for Cousins to agree

It doesn't matter if you like it or not. How is this move a surprise to anyone? The top 3 have publicly said that they don't want a rookie QB starting, and Cousins was the best of the available bunch to go out there, take some licks while the line gets sorted, and be a valuable asset in the QB room. You guys really want Aiden giving Mendoza pointers?
