Hes going to cost us like 8 million and they were going to release him, but on the other hand our secondary was a disaster last year and we need some vet presence. Plus we are going to have to overpay for any talent to come here right now.
It’s the benefit of having all the cap space and taking on cap casualty contracts from other teams for serviceable quality players who may have not signed here if released. Filled a position of need so we can now focus free agency and draft at different spots on the roster. We’re down to the studs on defense with Maxx gone—Gotta to start somewhere.

I will might also add that it feels good to finally have what seems to be a modernized competent front office for once for I dunno in the last 40 years..

Yeah Spytek is doing pretty good, TT would have been good also but he was kind of an NPC personality wise.

He only has 6 INTs in 8 seasons but maybe they just don't throw his way?

The stats aren't that great.

Hopefully he isn’t disgruntled.

Stats lie. You in particular should know that by now.

Love this move. This guy is a dog and we got him for peanuts. Didn’t have to overpay in FA either.

Spending draft capital on a player who was announced as being released a few days ago.

His age.
Cupboard being bare on defense.

8 mill in this market for a vet of his caliber is a steal. Obviously he's not without his flaws, being older and coming off an injury. But he gives the nickel position a floor this year without long term investment. Low risk/high reward.

...this guy can play, and has a knack for making plays when it counts. ...he had some injuries last year with a groin and knee, as I remember, and those definitely were part of his down year last year. ....if I remember correctly, he was often 'questionable'..... ...if he is healthy, this is a nice pick up for a late rounder, and doesn't break the bank.

...also, with the 6 and 7 rounders, and the holes we have to fill, I can't say that I see it as a bad strategy, if we know there is a player that can contribute, add depth, whatever, and is about to be released, if we feel the contract is ok and we want to make sure we get him. ....rather than using t hose picks on guys we end up releasing before we even get through camp...

Al Holcomb was with the Bills last year, so the Raiders have great information on Johnson. I like this deal - we needed CB help and this is a short term commitment that helps to stabilize the secondary now but won't prevent young players from getting on the field if they're ready.

Traded two special teams/bubble guys for someone that will most likely start at the nickel. Can tackle, cover, and defend the run

We didn't trade two picks...... we sent them a 6 and got back a 7 along with Johnson. We still have 11 draft picks.

Note that the Raiders had 2 6ths and the Bills had 2 7ths, so it's not certain yet which specific picks would get swapped.
