Damnit, don't give me hope. Getting Kubiak and Schwartz in the same offseason would be too much of a good thing.

Looks like the Browns are determined to wrestle with the Jets for least desirable destination. Holding a coach hostage is likely going to bring pause to any potential candidates for other positions. Maybe it's a strategy to get a team to trade a pick for him but nothing screams dysfunction than forcing a DC to stay on staff that doesn't want to be there. Ideally the DC would have some experience with Kubiak being a rookie head coach it's more ideal to surround him with some experienced coordinators especially ones that may have served as HC in the past.

Throw Cle a 7th rounder for Schwartz if Kubiak wants him. I think an experienced DC would be good with a first time HC

Q said on his podcast that we could hire Arden Durde from Seattle and they couldn't block it because it would be a "promotion" because he would go from not calling plays with Seattle to calling plays with the Raiders. That's not how it works. He has the DC title so they could block any move other than to a HC position. It's possible they would not block him from the opportunity, but that would be MacDonald's decision to make.

Agreed, having that job title is the decider. Not the actual job function.

So two, since the browns don't count. Anyway, the only thing that matters is who does Kubiak want. He may not want a former Head Coach there looking over his shoulder.

I mean on one hand, it would be nice for a first year HC to have an reliable autonomous counterpart running your defense, he wouldnt have to worry about that side of the ball, or micromanage anything.

If he leaves after a year to become a head coach it is because he had an excellent year as DC. That’s a good thing

I'd like a DC who isn't a stubborn ass. The Pats under Bill B were quoted as saying that they don't run a set scheme. They have 16 defenses for 16 weeks of the season, etc. Each and every week they would adapt and run a new variation. If a team struggled against press man, zone, blitz, pattern match zone, odd or even front, stunts, etc that's what they would do. They would force an offense to beat them in a way the offense couldn't beat others prior. That's the way. I say this because many coordinators are dead set on running things one way. Adaptability is key. Especially on defense with modern rules, disadvantages, and variety of different modern offenses.

This requires: both a non stubborn mind & a good teacher, intelligent & disciplined defensive players. Not an easy task
