Mayer on the move? Dophins nab Waller instead (pg.2)

Unread post by BoKnows81 »

Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald reports the Dolphins have “had their eye on Raiders TE Michael Mayer for a while.”

This news comes after it was reported that the Dolphins are looking to acquire a tight end after they traded Jonnu Smith to the Steelers. Mayer, who was drafted 35th overall by the Raiders back in 2023 has a career receiving line of 48-460-2 in 25 career games and took a backseat to Brock Bowers last season. Any hopes of Mayer breaking out in 2024 were immediately laid to rest after Bowers came to town, but the former Notre Dame prospect could still have something to offer another team that can give him a more significant role. Mayer has two years left on his rookie contract and should provide an immediate upgrade over the likes of Julian Hill and Pharaoh Brown, who would likely battle for the Dolphins’ starting tight end job if camp opened today.

If I were Miami, I would of traded a 3rd or 4th for Mayer instead of a 6th & 7th for a COMPLETELY washed up, old, non committed Darren Waller. In an absolute heartbeat. Lmao at anyone who thinks Miami solved their TE issue. But that team is clueless so I'm not shocked.
I mean I'm all for trading the guy for the right price but kind of bullshit comment is this? If he did have mental problems, how the f[raiders_icon]ck did he let you down? Shit ain't nothing to mess around with. We have a superstar TE that had 112 receptions so Mayer would of likely been invisible last year anyway. Ridiculous comment.
Sorry Dr Phil, but I dont see it that way. This is a highy competitive sport, if you cant cut the mustard both physically and mentally then you shouldnt be playing, period. He quit on the team when we needed him, thats how he let us down. I cannot forgive that, ever.

I'm sure he doesn't care if you ever forgive him. How old are you?
Miami solves their TE problem:

When the Miami Dolphins traded tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, it was reported that they had already engaged with teams on potentially trading for his replacement. However, not many expected the Dolphins to trade for a player who had recently retired. According to NFL Media, the Dolphins are finalizing a trade with the New York Giants for tight end Darren Waller. Miami is giving up a 2026 sixth-round pick, along with a conditional 2027 seventh-round pick for the former Pro Bowl pass-catcher. Waller made the surprising decision to retire at 31 last year following his one season with the Giants. Since New York still owned his rights, Miami had to give up compensation to acquire him. Waller caught just 52 passes for 552 yards and one touchdown in 12 games with the Giants in 2023, but he was viewed as one of the best tight ends in the league during his time with the Las Vegas Raiders. He put together back-to-back 1,100-yard campaigns beginning in 2019, and led all tight ends with 107 catches for 1,196 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns in 2020.
For about two games..
We’ll see on Waller. Really seemed to lose his motivation after getting paid, maybe a while on the outside has changed his perspective some.
Yep. He's one of the most Paid Now I'm Done players I've ever seen.

Maybe he blew all his money already, which is why he un-retired.

It’s definitely a job and not a passion for him.

Maybe he blew all his money already, which is why he un-retired.
...or realized that options are most often less lucrative out here in the real world, and there is an expiration date on an NFL player career.
