Music Trivia Thread

I have been putting this in other threads, but am afraid I am just cluttering up those threads, so I will stop doing that and just do stuff in this one. Care to join in? I am all about learning more about music. So here we go.

Here are five artists from the UK who are really well known, and they had hits on both sides of the Atlantic, but had a lot more success in the US than in their home countries. There may be more and if you know one, feel free to join in.

First, we start with Ringo Starr of the Beatles. He had a lot of success as a solo artist in the US with a number of top 40 singles, far more in the US than in the UK. Songs like Photograph did quite well in the US, but not so much over seas

Second, Sheena Easton, she did well on both sides, but had a lot more success in the US with songs like Sugar Walls

Third, the Alan Parson's Project. They did OK in the UK but had a lot of success in the US, with songs like Games People Play

Next we have Steve Winwood who was quite successful as a solo artist, but much more so in the US

And finally, we have George Harrison, another Beatle. Had a lot of success as a solo artist in the US and was also a part of the Traveling Wilbury's.

I can tolerate some of Plant's solo stuff as he's not screeching in the songs I'll listen to

I don't recall off the top of my head what is on it, but there was a couple/few songs that were okay. It's not the worst album.... and not the best. "In Through the Out Door" sucked way worse IMO. I'm happy they decided not to carry on after Bonham's death.

In 1969 a band from England was doing some late night recording but decided they wanted a female vocalist for a couple of lines in the song. An agent was able to get a hold a very pregnant singer named Merry Clayton right around midnight. She came to the studio, belted out a few powerful lines and went home. Sadly just hours later, she suffered a miscarriage and would never listen to or sing the song she sang that night for many years.

Heck, I might put Priest ahead of most those bands including Zeppelin. But I am also a genre guy. In their genre, Zeppelin is right at the top. Collins in his pop category would be near the top. So hard to crown a best in music. Nobody takes Air Supply seriously, but in the sappy love song genre you could make a case that nobody was better at it than them. Bee Gees are considered trite until you look at the number of songs they wrote and performed and also gave to others thus in the song writers area, they are really quite up there. Elton john and Bernie Taupin are legends simply for being one of the most incredible writing duos ever and won an Oscar in 2018 for a new original song. That is five decades of excellence.

Prophetic or just happenstance? You make the call
In 1976 a lead singer was watching his band struggle with addiction and his good friend and guitar player had just been in a car accident he had barely survived. As happens to bands from time to time, he began writing his life into his music. This song he wrote included lyrics about the accident and all the stuff they were dealing with. When it came time to lay down the tracks, the band had no idea the deeply dark song would also prove prophetic. When the album hit the stores, the cover had the band in flames and the song contained lyrics about death. Three days later, Lynard Skynard would see the airplane they were in in a plunge to the ground and burst into flames. The song, "That Smell" would be a hit for the dead rockers and that cover? That would be changed soon after.
